The #1 Holiday Health Hack: Clean Up Your Pantry Before the New Year

Dec 30, 2024

The holidays are in FULL swing and I hope you are having a restful and enjoyable time with your friends and family!

This time of year there is a bit of a let down from the excitement of Christmas, yet kids are still home, and often we have a break from work, so it becomes really easy to let our goals for our health slip in priority.

I find that for myself and my clients, the most helpful strategy is to make sure that food in your house is in alignment with your goals.

Is that tricky to do around the holidays? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes.

Here’s a simple health hack that sets you up for success in the new year: Start with your pantry. Cleaning out the processed foods and restocking with healthier options can make a world of difference—especially when the holiday treats are calling your name.

Why Your Pantry Matters
Your pantry is the heart of your home’s nutrition. If it’s full of ultra-processed foods, it’s easier to fall into unhealthy habits. Cleaning it out now gives you a fresh start for the new year.

Are they healthier processed foods? Yes absolutely. And I always tell my clients to NOT PANIC and start throwing everything away all at once. That is very overwhelming AND expensive.

I have created a guide that gives you the top ingredients to ditch. You can download that HERE. In general, starting with food colorants, high fructose corn syrup, fake sugars, artificial flavors, and any ingredients in the form of abbreviations (i.e. BHT, TBHQ) are a great place to start.

How to Spot Ultra-Processed Foods

  • Look for long ingredient lists with unpronounceable items.
  • Watch for hidden sugars (anything ending in "-ose") and artificial additives.
  • Toss anything with hydrogenated oils or "artificial flavors."

Restocking With Healthier Options

  • Instead of: Chips.
    Try: Nuts or air-popped popcorn.
  • Instead of: Sugary cereals.
    Try: Oats or whole-grain granola.
  • Instead of: Soda.
Try: Sparkling water with a splash of fruit juice.
